Flint Hills Bible Church - information about the purpose of our college and young adult ministries

College & Young Adults

The Westminster Shorter Catechism states that the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. This is the aim of the mature believer and it is our desire to see college age students moving toward that mark as they grow in Christ likeness. (Col. 1:28-29) Our greater purpose as a church is summed up in 2 ways, to obey the Great Commandment (Mark 12:30-31) and fulfill the Great Commission (Matt 28:19-20). Our desire is to see College and Young Adults pursuing that purpose as well.

Emporia State University is 2 miles from Flint Hills Bible Church. We recognize both the blessing and the responsibility that this close proximity brings. Because we are a prominent church in the area, known for biblically based ministries and expository preaching, we draw many ESU students. Our philosophy of ministry is separated into 3 goals; INVEST, INTEGRATE AND IGNITE.

INVEST: (2 Timothy 2:2, Ephesians 4:11-12) Investing into the next generation of Christian leaders. Equipping the saints for the work of the ministry.

INTEGRATE: (Romans 12:4-5, Ephesians 4:1-7, Titus 2:1-6) Integrating young adults into the body of Christ. Encouraging discipleship relationships.

IGNITE: (Luke 24:32, Matt 5:16, Romans 12:9-21, Matt 28:19-20) Igniting a passion for Christ, and our call to represent Him to the lost.

How do we go about pursuing those three ministry goals?

Sundays: Flint Hills Bible Church meets at 9:00 am with a wide variety of Sunday school classes for adults. These are a great way to get connected to a small group of members and develop relationships within the church.

Our Main Service is a 10:15 am as we gather to corporately worship the Lord in fellowship, singing and sitting under the word of God preached.

FHBC Bible Studies: There are many different Inductive Bible studies for men and women throughout the week that meet for the purpose of studying the scriptures.

Out Reach: Xenos is the outreach aspect our our College and Young Adults ministry at Flint Hills Bible Church. Xenos is also a recognized student organization on campus at ESU. Flint Hills Bible Church owns a Coffee House called the Inner Bean @ 1328 Exchange St opened daily from 2pm-10pm. Being just two blocks out from the campus, it’s a great way for the church to make connections with students! Informally, Xenos members are encouraged to be seeking opportunities to make disciples on campus and represent the Lord in all they do. In addition to our general call in Matt 28:19 we have some formal settings for interactions with ESU students.

Xenos Small Groups: We have different college age focused small groups intended to minster to ESU students and young adults that meet on campus and at the Inner Bean Coffee House.  Various days and times.

Xenos Connect: (Thursdays at 7PM) With so much going on at work, school and church it's nice be able to have a time to get all of Xenos members and our new friends connected and encouraged. That's why we’ve set aside Thursday nights at the Inner Bean to make sure we are doing just that. It’s a time that we make sure we are connecting with the Word, in song, in fellowship, with each other and with new contacts on the campus.

A brief word on teaching methods:
The way we engage students is through the word of God. In particular we teach the scriptures using two methods of teaching. (1) Expository Preaching. (1 Cor. 2:12-16) As a regular feature we teach verse by verse through a book of the Bible in an effort to draw from the text what God says and then apply His word to our lives. In the last 3 years we have taught through, Philippians, Romans, Ephesians 2:1-10 and Genesis. (2) Teaching Doctrine. Sometimes refered to as topical, this teaching style has an emphasises on various topics (e.g. Theology, Ethics and Doctrine). While teaching topically we make it a point to ground the lessons in the word of God and teach the topics in an exegetical way (Romans 16:17). There is value in both methods. We think through what might be most benificial, semester to semester. The consistent aim, no matter the method, is faithful men rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)

Xenos Events: We have a lot of different events that we enjoy doing on Friday nights. From worship nights and game nights to our Grace and Truth events. Grace and Truth nights feature guest speakers who address current issues from a Christian worldview.
